Sotheby’s Will Sell ABBA’s Piano in September

August 28, 2015

Sotheby’s will sell the piano ABBA used to make many of its hits in the 1970s, the auction house announced today. The Swedish pop group’s piano is one of the world’s finest, the announcement proudly (and not necessarily empirically) states, adding that “no other single instrument has featured more prominently in pop music since the 1970s.” How can you resist it?

In a fittingly campy description, Sotheby’s says, “From the opening refrain of ‘Mamma Mia’, to ‘Waterloo’ and ‘Dancing Queen,’ the sound of this piano has resonated throughout countless bedrooms, headphones, and dancefloors across the world.” It has now also been heard at Sotheby’s London headquarters, where it was played this morning in a special performance by ABBA parody group Björn Again.

No asking price was given in the announcement, perhaps because money, money, money, must be funny in the rich man’s world.

If, as you read this, you thought yourself, “Gimme, gimme, gimme an ABBA piano,” you can see it auctioned in September, when the winning bidder will take it home. It could be you! Or you can just see the piano in action here
