Okwui Okpokwasili Named Resident Commissioned Artist at New York Live Arts

Okwui Okpokwasili, the writer, performer and choreographer, has been named the next resident commissioned artist by New York Live Arts, the organization announced Monday.

The residency is two years long and is aimed at furthering the work of mid-career artists with nearly $200,000 in direct support, including a salary and health benefits and a commission for New York Live Arts. Ms. Okpokwasili plans to use it to develop a multidisciplinary performance piece, “Poor People’s TV Room.” The work, which she is creating with Peter Born, uses dance, song, text and film to explore the women’s resistance movement in Nigeria.

“I now have a two-year span where my greatest concern can be the breadth of my imagination and the rigor of my practice,” Ms. Okpokwasili said in a statement. “Bronx Gothic,” an award-winning earlier work, will be performed at Live Arts in October.

The previous resident commissioned artists at Live Arts were Yasuko Yokoshi and Kyle Abraham. Live Arts also said it would offer support to six choreographers to develop work through its Live Feed program, which used to be known as its Studio Series. They are: Andrea Kleine, Sonya Tayeh, Adrienne Truscott, Preeti Vasudevan, Larissa Velez-Jackson and Gillian Walsh.
